Lithium-Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) Plant, Quebec

Design and build a new lithium-iron phosphate (LiFePO4) plant in Candiac, Quebec.

Client: Clariant International Ltd.

Project objectives

  • Manufacture a new material to replace the one currently used to manufacture cathodes in lithium-ion batteries.
  • Manufacture a “greener” product with a longer life span than existing products.

Based on a pilot plant in Germany, our goal was to design and build a facility capable of manufacturing 2,400 tons of lithium-iron phosphate per year, including administrative offices, laboratories and storage space. Our mandate included the study phase as well as the provision of a complete range of services (engineering, procurement and construction management/EPCM), which facilitated the transition from the existing pilot plant to a more comprehensive facility. In order to ensure compliance with industry standards, effective communications and close coordination with the client and the European suppliers were necessary during this project.

To date, this project has no comparable equivalent in the world; the construction of this new facility has set a precedent.
