Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre

This vast development includes the largest exhibition centre in the southern hemisphere and one of the world’s greenest – receiving a 6-star Green Star pilot rating in January 2008.

Our client’s challenge

Located on the banks of the Yarra River, the AU$1bn South Wharf development also includes an 18-storey Hilton Hotel, a 50,000m² retail complex, 4,000m² of refurbished sheds housing restaurants and market stalls, a new pedestrian bridge and a 19,000m², nine-storey office tower, which achieved a 5-star Green Star design rating.

Our approach

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff provided all engineering services from bid phase through to delivery.

One of the key challenges was designing an integrated water cycle, which harvests rainwater from the significant roof areas and recycles black water. It is one of the largest building-installed black water treatment plants in Australia.

The Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre has been heralded as a major new landmark for Melbourne, winning numerous awards in recognition of its architecture and green features.
