Lethbridge is the largest city in Southern Alberta. Lethbridge is located southeast of Calgary on the Oldman River. Known as the commercial, financial, transportation and industrial centre of the region, the city’s economy developed swiftly from coal mining in the 19th century and agriculture in the following century. Most people today work in healthcare, education, retail and hospitality sectors. Lethbridge is a strong proponent of the arts, with three facilities dedicated to the arts (Yates Memorial Centre, Bowman Arts Centre, and Southern Alberta Art Gallery), and a symphony orchestra that has been performing in the city since 1961. Beyond arts, Lethbridge dedicates 16 percent of the land within the city boundaries as parkland.
