Port Elgin is named after former Governor General, James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin. The community merged with the town of Saugeen Shores in the 1990s and offers several beaches on Lake Huron, close to MacGregor Point Provincial Park and Southampton in Bruce County. During the 19th century, the village’s harbor facilities contributed to its economic development as a distribution centre for the surrounding agricultural region. In recent years, the economy has been most influenced by tourism and recreation, along with the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station.
