Grande Prairie Airport Development Plan

WSP prepared a detailed Airport Development Plan to address substantial recent traffic growth Alberta’s Grande Prairie airport.

Client: Grande Prairie Airport Commission

Our client’s challenge

Traffic at the Airport has substantially increased in the past years as a result of growth in the region’s oil and gas sector. Consequently, future expansion of the Air Terminal Building and expansion of aviation and non-aviation related commercial developments are critical to the continued success of the airport. A major challenge is to accommodate the future expansion of the air terminal building that is currently faced with a number of airside and landside constraints.

Our approach

A primary focus of the Development Plan was provision for future expansion of the ATB and commercial lands as well as consideration of expanded airside infrastructure. This involved the future extension of both runways and the development of an expanded taxiway system in order to accommodate current and projected design aircraft. To complete the plan, a variety of deliverables across many disciplines were required. These included:

  • Review of regional planning and development objectives to ensure that the long-term viability of the Airport is not compromised by the expansion of surrounding urban development.
  • Aviation activity forecasts based on regional and international socio-economic factors.
  • Short, medium and long term functional requirements for various components of the airport.
  • Functional program and schematic design concept for an expanded airport terminal building.
  • Airport Land Use Plan that will guide future airport development in a controlled and logical manner consistent with the safe and efficient operation of the airport.
  • NEF Noise exposure contours.
  • Capital cost estimate based on phased development of the airport.
  • Financial pro-forma that examined projected revenues and expenditures over a 20 year time frame.
  • Economic impact study that examined direct, indirect and induced benefits associated with the Airport’s operation.

Outcome

The Airport Development Plan for Grande Prairie Airport provides a framework with which to meeting the long-term needs of airport stakeholders and the travelling public, while at the same time presenting a vision of the airport that can be endorsed by the broader community. Future expansion of the terminal was accomplished through the relocation of the airport access road and by expanding the terminal at a 45 degree angle, which allowed for a deeper airside apron.
