Iqaluit International Airport - P3 Advisory

WSP acted as Owner’s Technical Advisor for the Iqaluit International Airport Improvement Project, the largest capital infrastructure project for the Government of Nunavut.

Client: Government of Nunavut

Our client’s challenge

Improving existing infrastructure in Canada’s northern regions creates economic development opportunities. The Government of Nunavut needed a trustworthy partner to act as their Technical Advisor throughout the life cycle of the Iqaluit International Airport improvement project.

Our approach

The redevelopment program, the first large-scale Public-Private Partnership (P3) endeavour of its kind for the Government of Nunavut, is focused on the following components:

  • Construction of new air terminal building
  • Construction of new combined services building housing ARFF and maintenance operations
  • New Field electrical centre
  • Extensive airside rehabilitation and expansion program, including expanded aprons, new taxiways G and F, new airfield lighting and signage systems

As the owner’s technical representative, WSP provided project planning, indicative design services, assistance with proponent selection, review of project designs by Project Co and is currently providing technical assistance during construction. Project management, architectural, engineering and environmental technical expertise is provided by WSP for this project.

Outcome

The $300M airport redevelopment program to enhance Nunavut’s economic growth is currently in progress with estimated completion in 2017.
