North Park Street Roundabouts and Halifax North Common Detail Design

Surveying, traffic analysis, civil engineering, relocation of municipal infrastructure and urban landscape design.

Client: Halifax Regional Municipality

Our client’s challenge

In consideration of the problems associated with the pre-existing North Park Street and Halifax Common intersections as well as the areas aging infrastructure, the Halifax Regional Municipality decided through detailed background analysis and public / stakeholder consultation to undergo a complete multi-intersection upgrade. It was determined that the installation of multi-lane roundabouts was the preferred approach.

Our approach

Our engineering team has extensive experience in the planning, analysis, design and construction of urban street and intersection upgrades, including the use of modern roundabouts. In recent years, we have completed several infrastructure projects similar to the “North Park Street Roundabouts and Halifax North Common Detail Design” project.

WSP’s diverse team of design professionals, supported by in-house geotechnical and land surveying staff, were well-suited to provide the services required for the successful completion of this significant Halifax project.

This was the first intersection redesign and major municipal roundabout project of its kind in Halifax. The project was more than just reconfiguring two intersections — it was a bold approach to an overall municipal development plan. Redesigning allowed for significant neighbourhood improvements; including upgraded street, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure - along with protected bike lanes on Rainnie Drive, lighting and landscape architecture which created high quality public spaces on the Halifax Common.
