The Bow

 

Recognized for innovative solutions, The Bow project has received numerous design and construction awards. The office tower was named to the Most Spectacular Buildings list by Emporis, a global design and construction authority, and secured first place in Azure Magazine’s top projects of 2012.

The mixed-use development is among western Canada’s tallest buildings and Calgary’s first steel skyscraper. The Bow project was awarded the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction Award of Excellence, the American Concrete Institute Award of Excellence, and the Consulting Engineers of Alberta Showcase Award, in the category of Studies, Software and Special Services.

The Bow is a crescent-shaped, steel-framed tower containing 58 floors of office and retail space. Its curved design reduces the impact of wind, while three sky gardens offer greenspace for employees. The project cost $1.4 billion to construct. WSP’s involvement included:

  • Design, establishment and maintenance of a suitable control network to satisfy stringent layout requirements, keeping a demanding project schedule on-course.
  • Employment of sophisticated, state-of-the-art survey technologies such as precise digital inclination sensors.
  • Use of leading-edge methodologies such as monitoring of building dynamics and correction of GPS-derived positions for building tilt, both in real-time. The applications of these methodologies are unprecedented in a Canadian skyscraper project.
