Wabush Airport Master Plan

WSP completed an Airport Master Plan to address recent traffic increases and infrastructure limitations at the site.

Client: Transport Canada

Our client’s challenge

Wabush Airport provides key access to the remote communities of Wabush and Labrador City, and regional mining operations. In recent years, traffic at the airport has increased substantially, straining existing infrastructure, which results in congestion and delays.

Our approach

A component of an Airport Master Plan included the preparation of a capacity/demand assessment, functional program and schematic design for a renovation and expansion to the 3,000 m2 airport terminal building.  The scope of work included the preparation of a Class C cost estimate.  The proposed design included a 2,000 m2 addition to the facility that incorporated an expanded hold room and new outbound baggage facilities. In addition, WSP undertook an assessment of the existing terminal building and the preparation of a building condition report.

The Airport Master Plan also included:

  • Aviation activity forecasts based on regional and international socio-economic factors.
  • Identification of short, medium and long term functional requirements for various components of the airport including the airport terminal building, airport support facilities, airside infrastructure, landside infrastructure, and commercial development lands.
  • Airport Land Use Plan that will guide future airport development in a controlled and logical manner consistent with the safe and efficient operation of the airport.
  • Capital cost estimate.

Outcome

The Airport Master Plan was completed in February 2013 on budget and on schedule. Recommendations of the Airport Master Plan included expansion of the airport terminal building plus improvements to airside/landside infrastructure including: an expanded terminal apron; provision of a new parallel taxiway; and improvements to landside infrastructure, including expanded vehicle parking and revised terminal curb roads.

The Airport Master Plan for Wabush Airport provides a framework with which to guide Transport Canada in meeting the long-term needs of airport stakeholders and the travelling public, while at the same time presenting a vision of the airport that can be endorsed by the broader community.
