WSP was awarded a contract by Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) for the supply of consulting engineering services for the 400 kV Interconnection to Abu Dhabi Island. The contract was awarded to the Abu Dhabi Office of PBP, from where the project will be engineered and managed, with significant support from PBP technical specialists in the UK.

The project comprises a U-shaped turbo fan engine test cell and a preparation building. The test cell is essentially a 13m x 13m thick-walled reinforced concrete box; 60 metres long where the engine sits on a frame, with a 22m high air-intake at one end and a 26 metre high exhaust stack at the other end. The preparation shop is a steel framed structure, 88m x 36m on plan and 17 metres high, equipped with a 30-tonne monorail and bridge crane system. The preparation shop also houses a second test cell for smaller engines, offices and control rooms.

The Sharjah Expo project is about architectural concept, functionality and speed of design and construction. This was achieved through the client having a very clear vision of what they wanted and by when, along with close collaboration between the Architect Hopkins and WSP the engineer and AMBB the contractor.
