Mall of the Emirates

The Mall of the Emirates is the first retail project in the region to go through a major vertical redevelopment whilst remaining fully operational. The expansion provides a further 35,000 square meters of retail, a new 24 screen VOX cinema as well as 12 restaurants and cafes.

Bullet Client: Majid Al Futtaim

WSP were commissioned to undertake the full design of the expansion including MEP, Fire & Life Safety, Fire Protection design,  ICT , Audio Visual, Acoustic and Vertical Transportation services.

The Mall of the Emirates wasn’t originally designed to have another level added to it and required significant MEP consideration.

We started by identifying the unique challenges and solutions early on and rerouting the electricity supply over 250m to the other side of the mall without interruption to the service. We also relocated every component of the existing plant in a two-phased approach without any disruption to the existing mall and gained permanent power released on time despite complexity of approvals process with local authorities.

We went beyond industry best practice; nearly everything that we did on the project was a first because of the nature of the challenge – from the unique approval by DEWA for the agreement to use single compressor chillers, to the huge logistical challenge of working above the existing mall, nothing of this scale and complexity had been done before.
