Zayed National Museum

The Zayed National Museum has a very striking design. With a gross internal area of 58,698m2, the museum is contained within an elevated mound that incorporates a lobby, gallery spaces constructed as suspended ‘pods’, a pavilion for special exhibitions and a falconry centre with live displays.

Bullet Client: Tourism Development & Investment Company

WSP was appointed, as part of a joint venture with the architect, to lead the engineering design for Abu Dhabi’s Zayed National Museum, and is responsible for translating the ambitious concept design into something buildable and functional.

Expertise has been drawn from across the group, with four different businesses across the world collaborating to produce the finished design, providing an enormous range of specialist design services, from design management, building engineering, facades and environmental consultancy to acoustics, IT and security.

One of WSP’s greatest challenges was leading the design and project management process to coordinate so many skilled and diverse specialists. For the client, the size and diversity of WSP provided not only a one-stop shop for all engineering disciplines, but a manageable service with fewer interfaces

As a joint-venture partner with the architect, WSP  took on greater responsibility than an engineer would normally do on a project of this size, and was equally liable and responsible.
