Value life, value safety

Health and Safety is about making sure that people go home every day in a safe and healthy condition; there is nothing in life that is more important, says Rob Cooling, Director of Health & Safety.

For us, health and safety is embedded within the culture of our organisation and the way we operate, with a dedicated in-house Health, Safety and Risk Management team that not only offers a range of services to clients but also is responsible for driving the internal health and safety programme.

We recently undertook the mammoth task of polling all 1,560 employee attitudes and perceptions towards health and safety. Too often health and safety strategies are established in consideration of previous performance, however, we wanted to reach out to all our employees to ensure that they had a voice in shaping our health and safety programmes. The findings from the in-depth survey, which were also supplemented by various focus groups, helped to establish five strategic themes which form the basis of our health and safety culture change strategy.

We also ran a competition to come up with a slogan to embody our health and safety culture change programme, with the winning entry of Value Life, Value Safety. In this way everyone in the business is involved in our health and safety programme, it’s not something that’s happening to you, it’s something you are part of – that’s an important distinction when you’re driving a positive health and safety culture.

One of the key strategic themes within the health and safety culture change programme is competency, with significant feedback received from survey respondents on the importance of training and awareness in achieving positive health and safety outcomes. Subsequently, improvements to the company health and safety induction training have been introduced and over 100 members of the senior management team identified for completing the newly accredited Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Leading Safely course.

In our role as consultant, there is a significant opportunity to influence health and safety at the design stage of projects. Feedback from the survey also enabled us to determine content for training on safety in design to help improve the capability of engineers in eliminating or mitigating health and safety risks. The subject of occupational health was also very prominent with a training programme currently under development to address key health risks in the business, such as ergonomics and stress.

But the training and focus on competency isn’t just for those within our business. Our team is also helping drive best practice throughout the industry regionally, providing training to a wide range of clients across different sectors, such as oil and gas, construction, manufacturing and engineering. What really sets ourselves apart from the competition is our unique blend of academic knowledge and industry expertise. All of our consultants have substantial practical experience of managing health and safety requirements on large and complex projects and we are able to bring our know-how to the training room to create truly memorable learning experiences.

A large number of our courses are accredited by internationally recognised internationally bodies, such as the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH), the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). You can view more details here.

However we understand that sometimes a generic course won’t address the issue at hand so we are flexible to suit our clients’ needs. We will develop something unique just for them, for example we recently developed a four day course for government client in Dubai which was tailored to address specific company management system requirements and used case studies applicable to the organisation.
