In 2011, we were awarded an EPCM contract to design and deliver a cold store, part of Pfizer’s critical cold chain and requiring high reliability from all systems. The store was at 5° (±3°) with a capacity of 3,500 pallets (around 1,750 m2). It included the associated infrastructures, a specialised mechanical handling equipment package, a qualified building management system, a fire protection system and a refrigerated HVAC system.
Working in an integrated team with Pfizer and project subcontractors, we achieved a sustainable design and delivered an outstanding project despite the challenging programme, the insurer’s strict requirements, and spatial site constraints. Our services covered EPCM project delivery, project management, design management, procurement support, construction management, safety management and validation.
The refrigeration plant was designed to optimise energy efficiency while maintaining safe redundancy levels and its excellent air tightness minimises cold air losses through the building fabric – benchmarking well above industry standards of best practice. It was delivered on an operational site and completed in just 14 months.
We worked within our ACTIVE (Achieving Competitiveness Through Innovation and Value Enhancement) ideals of integrated partnering, promoting flexibility and openness, and the project won the ECI ACTIVE Project of the Year Award 2013.
