Reichold Chemicals Site, Switzerland

Remediation specialists from across WSP| Parsons Brinckerhoff's US, UK, German and Italian offices have collaborated on this clean-up of a chemical manufacturing site. The project involved the first use of chemical oxidation on a Swiss site.

Bullet Client Swiss North American Properties

Our client’s challenge

The project is part of a wider liability transfer programme for client Swiss North American Properties, which saw WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff also take on responsibility for sites within the US and Mexico.

Our approach

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff identified groundwater pollution from volatile organic compounds, and carried out detailed investigations to determine the scale of contamination and identify the most appropriate remediation approach.

Laboratory trials indicated that oxidation using permanganate would be the most practical method of decontaminating the site within the required timescale.

As this method was unfamiliar to the Swiss authorities, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff invested significant time and resources in achieving regulatory approval, including carrying out laboratory and field trials.

Three years on, the land has now been substantially decontaminated, and the team continues to carry out monitoring to ensure pollution levels comply with Swiss regulations and is working with the client to transition the site back into productive use.
