Marching for #BuildingEquality at Pride in London 2016

27 June - The construction industry took part in the capital’s Pride parade for the first time on Saturday 25th June.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff’s employee LGBT+ network ‘VIBE’, along with ten firms and 200 people participated as part of the #BuildingEquality group, which also included Arcadis, Arup, Balfour Beatty, Carillion, Laing O’Rourke, Lend Lease, Mott Macdonald, Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners, and Skanska.

The group was led by a Laing O’Rourke digger, the first to ever appear in a Pride parade, which drew in the cheering crowds. Each firm had a different colour t-shirt and the result was a colourful rainbow of construction companies all marching together for an LGBT-inclusive construction industry.

VIBE Co-Chair Abigail Frost said: “This was an incredible opportunity for ten firms to work together to try to change the image of construction. The #BuildingEquality group was set up in late 2015 to champion an LGBT-inclusive industry and on Saturday we were able to celebrate all the hard work that had gone into making our parade participation a success. Pride spectators were delighted to see engineers and construction professionals represented in the parade and all colleagues involved were proud to be there carrying the WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff banner on such an important day for the LGBT community.”

Paul Newing, UK HR Director and VIBE senior sponsor said: “Having an LGBT-inclusive workplace is not only the right thing to do but it also enables us to deliver the best we can for our people and our clients. A visibly LGBT-inclusive industry helps to attract a more diverse pool of talent to choose a career in engineering and the built environment.”

Now in its 43rd year, Pride in London is the biggest one-day event held in the capital and one of the world’s largest LGBT celebrations. Approximately 40,000 people from around 300 organisations took part in the parade this year including 95 new walking groups.
