Paj Valley to direct masterplanning in WSP’s planning and advisory industry business

01 March 2018 - WSP has recently appointed Paj Valley to the role of director of masterplanning. His appointment is part of the ongoing expansion of the planning and advisory strategic business team, targeted with playing a leading role in the development of the UK planning and design sector.

With over 25 years’ experience in masterplanning, urban design, planning, landscape design and town planning, Paj has a thirst for implementing innovation and creativity throughout his work. He is a Chartered Member and Fellow of the Landscape Institute, Chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of both the Urban Design Group and the Tourism Society.

Paj commented: “I am really excited about working with WSP and assisting the organisation to develop even stronger links within both the public and private development sectors.”

Previous work in over 40 countries globally has provided Paj with extensive understanding at a micro level, including design and implementation of small local sites as part of wider regeneration strategies. Notable awarding winning projects include the Bull Ring in Birmingham and the Avenue masterplan in Chesterfield. Paj has also worked on the Jeddah Corniche masterplan, the Birmingham HS2 Curzon masterplan and urban extensions to various sites across Mauritius.

WSP is also delighted to welcome the following recruits to its 7,800 strong business:

Gillian Risdale has taken up the role of regional director in the South West and Wales in highways at WSP, bringing with her an experienced background of 12 years at Highways England.

Gillian has worked in both supporting and operational roles; from managing the development and delivery of training programmes and implementing health and safety initiatives, to managing unplanned incidents on the strategic highway 24/7.

“WSP had been a company I had come across in the past and am thrilled I had the chance to come and work in a fresh, creative environment where skills are valued and there are wonderful opportunities to exploit.”

Gillian previously worked for various local authorities in the South West in the neighbourhood and housing sphere and is currently a board member of Solon South West Housing Association, based in Bristol.

Paul Aitken joins WSP as highways senior engineer and team leader from Scottish Borders Council.

Paul brings with him a wealth of knowledge in the industry with over 12 years as project engineer at SBC working on high profile projects such as the Galashiels Inner Relief Road, the A68 Pathhead to Tynehead Junction Improvements and the Jedburgh Flood Protection Scheme.

“I am excited to join WSP and be part of one of the world’s leading engineering professional services firms,” says Senior Engineer Paul Aitken. “What attracted me to WSP was their first class reputation and the prospect of being involved in some prestigious projects which will be an exciting and challenging opportunity.”

Mark Kelly joins WSP as technical director for the fire engineering team.

After over 10 years contributing his expertise to fire services in the UAE, moving from Profire Safety Consultants, Mark will now support WSP’s existing projects and look to attract new business for the fire engineering team.

“It’s great to be back on UK soil where I can comfortably now walk outdoors without being burnt by the UAE sun! I am thrilled to be part of a leading professional services firm and support new and existing projects within the fire engineering team here at WSP.”

Adam Alexander closes the door on his part-time contractor role at WSP and opens in to his new appointment as technical director in the mechanical, electrical and plumbing team. He joins the position with already four years’ experience in the business and a previous employment at Arup.

In his time at WSP, Adam has worked on a number of tall towers in and around London, becoming a specialist in mechanical engineering for tall buildings.

“I’m really excited to join WSP permanently. As part of my role, I’m keen to push forward automation in building engineering, using coding to help increase the efficiency and the quality of what we do.
