WSP responds to 25-year Environment Plan launch

January 11 – David Symons, WSP UK Director of Sustainability said:

“WSP welcomes the launch of today’s 25 Year Environment Plan, and the Prime Minister’s personal involvement with this crucial agenda. The plan helps give shape to Michael Gove’s ‘Green Brexit’ and provides assurance that a departure from the European Union will raise the UK’s environmental ambitions.

“Today’s plan sets out some strong ambitions.  We especially welcome a commitment to biodiversity net gain in new infrastructure developments and to doubling resource productivity by 2050.  These support existing leading commitments, such as ambitions to phase out new petrol and diesel car sales by 2040. Progressive measures to increase the sustainability of land management, biodiversity and action to use green spaces to support our health and well-being are all important.  The shift in narrative towards restoration and enhancement rather than preservation is also welcome.

“Today, 35 per cent of the Government’s own environmental indicators are in long term decline. The key challenges now are to put these ambitions into action, to measure progress and to give the proposed environmental watchdog strong powers. WSP looks forward to working across industry and with Government to translate ambition into delivery.”
