Jagannath Mallela’s career of over 18 years is dedicated to researching and advancing innovative solutions in the areas of development, design, construction and maintenance of sustainable highway infrastructure. An acknowledged expert in the field of pavement engineering and materials, Jagannath has contributed to significant advancements in this field including developing the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official’s (AASHTO) modern pavement design standard—the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide—and its subsequent implementation in several state highway agencies across the U.S.

His work, while closely associated with highway infrastructure, is cross-cutting and touches many areas of surface transportation including innovative project delivery, civil integrated management, highway traffic operations, sustainability and resiliency, highway maintenance, asset management, highway safety, planning, performance measurement and organizational/institutional capacity building. Jagannath has conducted applied research and training for several agencies including the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Transportation Research Board, AASHTO, and several state/provincial and local highway agencies and industry groups in the U.S., as well as globally.

Jagannath holds a doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Illinois, a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Mississippi, and a bachelor’s degree from Osmania University.
