Hydropower

WSP USA, formerly WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, has experts who provide a full range of engineering, program management and construction engineering support services to the hydropower industry, with particular expertise in FERC dam safety and in civil, structural, geotechnical/ geological, and hydraulics/hydrology engineering.

We apply our technical expertise, ingenuity and our ability to meet or exceed clients’ requirements in critical areas such as safety, quality, budget, schedule, scope and responsiveness. We have strong client relationships going back for more than two decades, having served as owner’s engineer and FERC dam safety consultants on major projects. At the same time, our hydropower group has an optimum structure with experienced mid-level and junior engineering staff to provide cost-effectiveness. Our core team can be combined with staff drawn from various engineering disciplines across the company, as well as subcontractors as needed, to field capable, highly qualified teams for hydropower and water resource projects.

Our capabilities include dam safety; condition assessment; dam remediation; feasibility studies; preliminary and detailed civil/structural/geotechnical engineering and design; design- build delivery; licensing/permitting; and time-sensitive Emergency Action Plans (EAP) and security evaluations, including plans and reports. We are experts in specialty tasks including penstocks, tunnels and pipelines; gate inspections and reliability analyses; concrete assessment and repair; finite element modeling; instrumentation monitoring and evaluation; hydrology and hydraulics; geotechnical investigations; seismic evaluations; bulkheads and caissons; embankment and levee inspections; operations modeling; environmental studies; settlement and seepage analyses; AAR and slot cutting; GIS support; and post- tensioned anchors. A hallmark of our dam safety services is our commitment to long-term partnering with our clients, combined with our ability to work effectively as an extension of client staff.

Our staff is actively engaged with professional industry associations such as the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, the United States Society on Dams, the Northwest Hydroelectric Association and the National Hydropower Association. We participate in a range of activities including developing and planning conferences and sessions, as well as presenting and publishing dam safety papers. WSP staff received the Outstanding Poster award at the 2014 Annual Conference of the United States Society on Dams.
