This project is a collaborative undertaking between the owner / architect / engineer for renovating a mixed use building. The original structure was completed around 1950.


WSP USA was originally brought in by the owner to aid in the design teams during the construction document creation phase. The ultimate goal was to aid the design team by creating a collaborative BIM model from Laser Scanning and 2D documentation to verify the constraints presented by the existing structure.

The firm took the original contract drawings and referencing historical steel sections built the model. All building elements were modeled using Revit. During model creation, steel information was laser scanned and compared to the 2D documentation. Once the point cloud and 3D laser scanning was completed, the compiled information was compared to the steel structure created from the original documentation, and any discrepancies between the original and scanned BIM models were addressed with the final consolidation in Revit.

During this process, WSP was able to communicate with the design group and ask questions about assumptions that were made regarding the existing structure and new design documents. This cooperative environment allowed all involved to use their various expertise in design, engineering and drafting to create a more accurate BIM model.
