Basra Sports City

WSP USA provided MEP engineering for Basra Sports City, located in Basra, Iraq. Built in two phases, Phase 1 involved the 65,000-seat main stadium, a 10,000-seat practice stadium, four practice fields, athlete housing, a VIP guest house, a fire station and surface parking.

Phase 2 consists of approximately 20 additional sporting venues in separate buildings. When complete, the project will be akin to an Olympics caliber venue. The project is being built by the Iraqi government under the auspices of the Ministry of Youth and Sport.

The main stadium was built to International Building Codes and FIFA Standards. In addition to its 65,000 seating capacity, the facility features: 15 suites; future build-out of 32 additional suites and 100 mini suites; VIP lounges and restaurants; spectator facilities including entry lobbies, concourses, restrooms, ticket offices, and concessions; team and performer facilities; press facilities; employee facilities including employee locker rooms and restrooms; building operation facilities including security, material and trash handling, maintenance, housekeeping, and storage; stadium operations office; underground parking and a tunnel connecting main stadium to the Practice Stadium.
