Bergenline Avenue Station

4739 - Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Transit System Weehawken Tunnel

Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) is a vital light rail connection that links the growing cities of the Hudson River waterfront. One of the goals of the system was to be both visually and functionally integrated into the municipalities through which it passes. As NJ Transit's general design consultant, we directed design of Bergenline Avenue Station in Weehawken, N.J., which has platforms located approximately 160 feet below one of the most congested and densely populated areas in the United States. The architectural design of the station features significant art works developed by local artists under NJ Transit’s Transit Arts Program.

We designed and coordinated lighting of the platforms, head houses, circulation elements, individual works of art and special lighting effects. The design addressed concerns of safety, including emergency lighting, security and aesthetics. The system uses a combination of metal halide and fluorescent sources for energy efficiency, long life, good color rendering capability and ease of maintenance.
