In 1998, the NYSDOT selected WSP as part of a Joint Venture (JV) to provide overall design coordination and final design services for this structure upon completion of the Environmental Impact Statement. The JV is presently providing structural inspection and interim repairs for the reconstruction of the 3.8 mile, 322 span Gowanus Expressway Viaduct. WSP has led the design for the Interim Deck Replacement of the complete 2,000,000 square feet of the Gowanus’ concrete deck. The JV also performed the following:

  • PIN X730.81: Interim replacement of over 650,000 square feet of concrete deck at the Gowanus Expressway/Shore Parkway Interchange. It also included a new 1,800 linear feet flyover ramp to help maintain traffic during construction and to be utilized in the future as a BUS/HOV Lane. The ramp will fly over the Shore Parkway, replacing the existing Blue Lane and eliminating the present merge with inbound Shore Parkway Traffic. Work included full replacement of structural concrete deck, new structure, structure widening, steel repairs, painting of steel, and MPT staging. Other work included NYC agency coordination, community meetings, and base, utility and ROW mapping.
  • PIN X730.19: Interim deck replacement of over 400,000 square feet at the Gowanus Expressway/Prospect Expressway Interchange and idening and deck replacement for 1,000’ through the Prospect Interchange including Ramp C & F. Work included full replacement of roadway concrete deck, painting of steel work, MPT staging during construction operations and maintaining the operation of the Bus/HOV lane from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to the BBT and the Prospect Expressway.
  • PIN X730.10: Interim deck replacement of 600,000 square feet over 3rd Avenue and Hamilton Avenue and widening and deck replacement for the 1,100’ BQE Connector. Work included full replacement of roadway concrete deck, painting of steel work, MPT staging during construction operations and maintaining the operation of the Bus/HOV lane from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to the BBT and the Prospect Expressway. Other work includes NYC Agency Coordination, community meetings, and base, utility and ROW mapping.
  • PIN X730.35: Repair of 360 steel deficiencies ranging from stringer repairs; bearing restoration; floorbeam repairs; and column repairs. Work included prioritization of repairs; full MPT; NYC Coordination; steel condition documentation.

WSP has also provided photogrammetric mapping of the complete Gowanus Expressway Corridor from the Verrazano Narrows Bridge to the BQE (7 miles) and detailed field survey mapping of the Gowanus Expressway Viaduct and the street level beneath the Gowanus Viaduct (3rd Avenue, Hamilton Avenue, and 65th Street).
