LIRR New Mainline Ronkonkoma Branch, Double Track, Phase 1

 

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has awarded us the final design and construction phase services contract for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) New Mainline Ronkonkoma Branch, Double Track, (Phase 1) project as part of the Skanska/Posillico design-build team.

The second track is the first segment of expanding rail capacity between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma, N.Y.; the overall plan is to add 12.6 miles (20 kilometers) of new track running parallel to the single-tracked sections, in phases, so that the LIRR can provide double-track service over the 18-mile (29-kilometer) stretch. Constructing a full second track will eliminate current LIRR operational limitations by increasing service reliability and on-time performance along the Main Line, providing for faster recovery time following service incidents and, when combined with other infrastructure improvements, providing more service capacity to meet existing and future service and ridership demands.

The project will be completed in two phases. Phase 1 includes the track, civil and structure work between Central Islip and Ronkonkoma, including construction of a 6-mile (10-kilometer) segment of rail. Design and field investigative activities began in January 2014. Construction began in April 2014.
