Logan International Airport Central Parking Garage

Logan Airport Parking

WSP USA provided design and construction phase services to expand Logan International Airport’s existing five-level central parking garage. Little room was available for outward expansion; therefore, 2,900 parking spaces were added by designing a three-level addition that rests atop the existing structure. One of the main challenges faced by our design team was that the three new levels had to be constructed while maintaining operations of the garage below. Out of the existing 5,000 spaces, a maximum of only 1,350 spaces were allowed to be impacted at any one time.

Another challenge was bringing the entire building to current seismic code with minimal retrofit of the existing five levels. This was accomplished by designing the new levels to resist the entire earthquake force. The use of three cranes made it possible to safely erect the new structure over the older one; this involved lifting precast members weighing as much as 35 tons over the existing roof and operating levels.

The garage, completed in 2007, provides convenient, short-term public parking and easy access to terminals B and C through two new pedestrian bridges. New vehicular bridges connect the expansion to the existing and adjacent West Garage structure, providing access to terminals A and E via moving walkways.

Our services included overall project management, structural design, constructibility reviews, scheduling, construction-phase services, resident inspection, and project controls. The expansion project garnered several awards, including the Construction Management Association of America New England Chapter 2006 Project of the Year.
