Memorial Highway & Division Street Bridges

The preliminary and final design for this project included four bridges and roadway reconstruction in the center of the business district in the City of New Rochelle, NY. The bridges spanned I-95, Division Street, and Metro North Railroad. Memorial Highway and Division Street are parallel roadways, which carry three lanes of one-way traffic. These roadways are connected on the east side by Railroad Place and on the west side by a connector ramp, thereby forming a complete loop. The intersection between Division Street and Union Avenue is signalized; other roadway intersections along the loop are controlled by stop or yield signs.

WSP USA provided Phase I - VI design services for the rehabilitation of the following four bridges:

  • Memorial Highway over I-95 & Metro-North Railroad - 5 span multi-girder
  • Division Street over I-95 - 2 span multi-girder
  • Division Street over Metro-North Railroad - 1 span rigid frame
  • Memorial Highway over Division Street Connector Ramp to I-95 - simple span multi-girder

During the field work phase special attention was given to the bridges over the Metro-North Railroad due to the catenary lines. The in-depth structural inspection was performed at night when track outages were available.

The plans included a complex construction staging plan. Pedestrian and vehicular access was maintained throughout the project area, and to the nearby Sound Shore Hospital. Uninterrupted railroad movement throughout the daytime hours was also considered. Our firm also performed construction support services.
