Route 17/I-86 Transportation Corridor Study

WSP USA, with HDR, were prime consultants for The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Transportation Corridor Study for an approximately 47-mile segment of New York State Route 17. The study examined the need for capacity improvements in the Route 17/I-86 corridor in Orange and Sullivan Counties.

The Route 17 corridor study was conducted to provide high-level recommendations for future corridor improvements that provide a satisfactory level of service (LOS) at a reasonable cost, support economic development, and consider environmental impacts. Also included was an analysis of local land use and transportation to develop recommendations for complementary land use that would shape a corridor management plan for sustainable development in the corridor.

Recommendations and alternatives developed by the study, in accordance with the NEPA/SEQR process, will be available for incorporation into future State Route 17 mainline/interchange construction projects.

A Transportation Partnering Committee (TPC), comprised of official representation from Orange and Sullivan counties, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA)/Metro-North Railroad, the NYS Thruway Authority, and local municipalities was formed to work closely with us on the project. There will also be interaction with local governments in the corridor to discuss future development plans, review local zoning, and identify growth issues and possible impacts as a result of proposed geometric and/or transit improvements.
