Strategies for Reducing the Impacts of Surface Transportation

Targeted to an audience of chief executives of state departments of transportation in the United States, this research study prepared by WSP USA and supported by the National Academy of Sciences, synthesized the effectiveness of climate change mitigation strategies.

The report, completed in March 2009, analyzed information on the effectiveness of a full range of transportation strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the surface transportation sector, including strategies to manage transportation operations, reduce the growth rate in vehicle miles traveled, achieve improvements in vehicle efficiency, shift to the use of low carbon fuels, and reduce GHG in the internal operations of transportation agencies. The report also provides scenario analyses of potential future GHG reductions in 2050 and summarizes climate action plans and planning at the statewide, regional, local, and international levels.
