University of New Mexico/Central New Mexico Community College/Sunport Transit Study

The UNM/CNM/Sunport Transit Project is an on-going effort focused on the development of a Bus Rapid Transit system to connect and improve access to the University of New Mexico (UNM), UNM Hospital and Health Sciences complex, Central New Mexico Community College (CNM), and Albuquerque International Airport (Sunport). These teaching institutions and the airport are situated in a 3.5-mile (5.7-kilometer) north-south corridor bounded by two arterial streets.

The daytime population within the study corridor includes over 90,000 students, faculty, staff, and associated jobs, plus an additional residential base of 20,000. The University sports arenas and professional baseball stadium are also within the study corridor and, collectively, include more than 55,000 seats.

Transit currently serves more than 22,000 riders a day through a mixture of local bus, rapid bus, and shuttle service. An emphasis of the project is to identify an enhanced and coordinated BRT system that achieves greater efficiency within the corridor and with better ties to the regional bus system. Parking policies and land use strategies are also being developed.

The project is on schedule to identify a locally-preferred alternative by mid-2013. Discussions are under way with FTA for possible Small Starts funding.
