O’Hare International Airport Modernization Program

The City of Chicago’s $6.6 billion O’Hare Modernization Program will reconfigure the airfield into a 21st Century layout with six parallel runways, allowing more simultaneous landings and takeoffs. WSP USA, formerly WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, is serving as construction manager, responsible for all contract administration, construction inspection, surveying, materials testing oversight, project scheduling, and cost control.

“Shoehorning new runways and runway extensions into a major operating airport is both fascinating and challenging,” says our project manager Eric Fischer. “The process is working because of the close collaboration of the FAA, airport personnel and airlines with the project team. We coordinate formally at weekly meetings and more often as needed to accomplish numerous construction and commissioning tasks concurrently while minimizing runway closures.”

Several milestones were reached that allow aircraft to land on three parallel runways simultaneously, even in inclement weather.
