Buildings Managing Director: Allan J. Montpellier, PE, LEED AP

WSP has promoted Allan J. Montpellier, PE, LEED AP, to managing director of its Boston office, effective January 1, 2011. He is replacing Bob Gracilieri, PE, who remains an Executive Vice President in the firm, focusing more intensively on client service and engineering.

Mr. Montpellier, who now serves as a senior vice president and project executive in the Boston office, has been with WSP for more than 16 years. In his current role, he is responsible for client care, contractual matters, overall project delivery, and employee adherence to high standards and core values. His responsibilities also include leading engineering conceptualization and design, with an emphasis on integrated systems and sustainability.

Mr. Montpellier has managed projects in a wide range of sectors, including commercial, hospitality, residential, science and technology, academic, cultural, retail and government. Some of his notable roles during his tenure with WSP include principal in charge for the LEED® Platinum Tacoma Center for Urban Waters project (Tacoma, WA), which encompassed water sample trace-testing laboratories and office support space; project manager and lead engineer for the LEED® Gold Woodland Park Zoo’s interactive multi-media Zoomazium (Seattle, WA); the project manager and lead engineer for the Pier 1 Embarcadero adaptive reuse project (San Francisco, CA), which received the AIA COTE Top Ten Green Projects award for 2002; and project manager and lead mechanical designer for the 300,000-square-foot Lion Plaza retail and office redevelopment in London’s financial district.

“Allan is greatly valued and respected not only by WSP employees, but also by our clients,” says David Cooper, PE, LEED AP BD+C, president and chief executive officer of WSP. “He’s a strong leader, an effective project executive, a very knowledgeable engineer, and an all-around great person. In short, he’s an ideal choice to lead our Boston office.”

Mr. Montpellier received a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and the American Institute of Architects. In 2008 he was selected by Consulting Specifying Engineer as one of the top 40 engineers in the country under 40 years of age.

“Allan understands that we are really in the people business, with engineering as the product of our efforts,” says Mr. Gracilieri, who presently serves as managing director of the Boston office and who over a period of ten years grew a small local business in Boston into a prominent national presence prior to joining WSP in 2007. “He’s a perfect fit for the managing director role, which will allow me to focus on client service and engineering. I am looking forward to many more years of leading teams and servicing clients on new exciting projects.”
