Aviation Expert Varughese Cherian Joins WSP's New York City Office

NEW YORK CITY, January 6, 2015 – WSP, the international engineering and design firm, has appointed Varughese Cherian, an electrical engineer with extensive experience in the aviation sector, as a senior vice president, announces John Bredehorst, executive vice president and managing director of WSP’s New York City Building Systems practice.

 

Mr. Cherian will be based in WSP’s Seventh Avenue New York City office.  In his new role, he will serve as a member of the office’s senior leadership team and also supervise building projects, with emphasis on those related to aviation.

Mr. Cherian’s previous positions include director of electrical engineering for KEO International Consultants, design director for Meinhardt Group, and principal at ARUP.   Some of his notable projects include the Muscat International Airport in Oman, Abu Dhabi International Airport, Ottawa International Airport, and terminals at JFK International Airport, among many others. 

“Beyond his aviation expertise, Varughese brings extensive experience in the international arena, having lived and worked overseas for much of his career,” says David Cooper, the USA region’s chief commercial officer and president of the USA Buildings practice.   “With WSP’s presence across 39 countries, and our global connectivity, his intercultural fluency is an enormous asset.”

Mr. Cherian’s leadership skills are equally significant, notes Mr. Bredehorst. “Varughese supervised ARUP’s electrical team across 10 U.S. offices, and managed Meinhardt Group’s New Delhi office of 135 employees.  He is well equipped to play an active role in the operations of our New York office, ensuring that we continue to provide the highest levels of service and expertise to our clients while continuing to deepen our offerings.” 

A resident of South Orange, N.J., Mr. Cherian holds a BSc (Hons) in electrical and electronic engineering from Queens University of Belfast, Ireland.  He is a LEED AP and a Chartered Engineer (M.I.E.E.).
