Austin, Texas, finalist in USDOT Smart City competition. The United States Department of Transportation’s Smart Cities Challenge invited medium-sized cities to submit an innovative proposal for how to create a fully integrated, first-of-its-kind transportation network that uses data, technology and innovation to shape how people and goods move in the future. Based on its Round 1 proposal, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced that Austin is one of seven finalist cities in the running for $50 million in funding.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff is working with the City of Austin and regional partners that include public sector agencies, nonprofit entities, and private-sector companies. The Round 1 proposal, “Vision for a 21st Century Mobility System” has been published on the City’s Transportation Department website. We are now consulting with Austin on development of its Round 2 proposal, a business plan for how the Austin pilot projects will build “ladders of opportunity” for disadvantaged communities, as they advance technological solutions for mobility that include autonomous and connected vehicles.
