TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA – Steve Kuciemba, national intelligent transportation systems practice leader at WSP USA, will moderate a roundtable discussion on connected vehicles and several other WSP transportation specialists will make presentations as part of the joint Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE)/Canadian ITE (CITE) 2017 annual meeting and exhibit in Toronto, Canada, July 30th to August 2nd.

The theme of this year's joint ITE/CITE event is Transportation for All: Putting New Ideas into Practice. It represents the need for a multifaceted approach to transportation, combining the visionary, forward-thinking ideas of tomorrow with a deep dive into the practical “how-to” professionals need to do their jobs today. This conference will provide a platform for transportation experts from the public and private sector to share their expertise and insights and for attendees to gain valuable access to professional development.

Mr. Kuciemba will facilitate a panel on Bringing Connected Vehicles to a City Near You, on August 1. A panel of senior experts from several different projects will provide a comprehensive update on large-scale pilot test implementations underway in New York City (NY), Tampa (FL), Wyoming, and Las Vegas (NV). Mr. Kuciemba will also preside over a meeting as chair of the CV/AV Steering Committee within ITE, a multi-council committee charged with soliciting ideas and issues as well as circulating updates and information across the platform of different councils and committees within the organization. The group will discuss upcoming issues related to planning, and terminology within the connected & automated vehicle topic area.

Jennifer Pangborn, a senior technical principal in transportation planning at WSP USA, will facilitate a panel on Let’s Be Smart About Growth: Applications of Trip Data, on August 1. A panel of traffic engineers and transportation planners—including WSP USA senior planning manager, Seth Torma—will explore different approaches to quantify trip making characteristics. Ms. Pangborn chairs the ITE Transportation Planning Council, which is focused on better preparing planners and engineers with the right tools and resources to plan better systems and places focused on people.

“Connected and automated vehicle implementation is evolving so quickly, with critical involvement from the academic, public and private sectors,” Mr. Kuciemba points out. “There are a growing number of large- and small-scale test implementations of connected vehicle infrastructure, and the goal within ITE is to help members understand and provide input to where the technology has been applied - and where it’s heading.”
