In November 2013, Perth Arena added to its credentials when awarded the top honours at the National Architect Awards.  The jury said the project was “puzzle-solving at its highest level" and commended the joint-venture design from Ashton Ragatt McDougall and Cameron Chisholm Nichol, incorporating WSP's mechanical, electrical, specialist lighting and environmental services, for its scale and colour.

The announcement follows on from success at the 2013 Western Australia Design Institute of Australia (DIA) Design Awards, with the Perth Arena taking home the top prize, the Best in State Award, as well as two Awards of Merit in the Interior Spaces (Public category).

Perth Arena was nominated at the 2013 PCA Innovation & Excellence Awards for the Award for Innovation and was also recognised at 2013 Australian Institute of Architects Western Australia Architecture Awards with the Overall George Temple Poole Award, The Jeffrey Howlett Award for Public Architecture and the COLORBOND® Award for Steel Architecture.

WSP are proud to have been part of one of Perth’s most ambitious and awarded projects. Located at the Northbridge Link site in Wellington Street, in Perth’s CBD this multi-user integrated entertainment and sports stadium, is designed to seat up to 12,000 people for sporting events and 14,000 for concerts.

Jury comments:

  • “The determination and thoroughness with which the architectural team has driven the intellectual generators of the project to their full conclusion, while creating supremely functional and delightful spaces, demonstrates a mastery not often encountered.”
  • “The Perth Arena represents a major legacy of the prosperity of WA’s boom time, but also represents a sophistication and coming of age for our city.”
  • "The architects have delivered a building of great visual complexity, outstanding functionality, a building that has captured the imagination of the general public and delivers for Perth an iconic piece of public infrastructure.”
  • “This is an iconic venue for Perth…the Arena itself is a work of art.” - Colin Barnett, Premier of Western Australia
  • “I’ve worked all over the worked and been to a lot of NBL venues, but Perth Arena is the best stadium I’ve seen.” – Rob Beveridge, Coach Perth Wildcats.
