Real time technology to increase safety for truck drivers on Victorian highways

This week in Melbourne transport experts will show how intelligent transport systems could increase safety for truck drivers on Victorian highways.

Speaking at the Intelligent Transport Systems Summit, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff Principal ITS Engineer Scott Benjamin explained the system will be designed to give truck drivers real time information about the availability of truck parking bays.

‘Real time information, displayed on signage, can help reduce the likelihood of drivers stopping in potentially hazardous locations. It can also provide rest area options to ensure drivers comply with heavy vehicle driver regulations,’ he said.

‘This design project is strongly focused on the safety benefits for truck drivers on one of Australia’s busiest freight routes.

‘Our project deliverables include analysis of available technology and proof of concept,’ said Mr Benjamin.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff Client Director for Transport (Victoria) Mr Tim Gosbell said this system is one example of the many emerging technologies that will be on display at the ITS Summit.

‘This conference attracts the leading ITS thinkers. With the ITS World Congress coming to Melbourne next year, this is a great preview of what Australia has to offer,’ said Mr Gosbell.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff Senior ITS Engineers, Shivaani Polley and Lachlan Gray will also present a case study on the Qatar Expressway Upgrade Project.
