Presenting at the Australasian Tunnelling Society’s technical meeting in Sydney, Maconochie and Hanke will share construction progress-to-date including information on the second and final tunnel boring machine breakthrough on 19 October.

The 4.8 km three-lane motorway – which includes a 2.5 km long, 13.1 m internal diameter, twin-tube tunnel – will provide a direct route to the city’s airport and allow vehicles to bypass the congestion of downtown Auckland.

The presentation will provide a summary of the key challenges and innovations required to design and construct New Zealand’s longest road tunnel, and highlight the benefits of using the Alliance delivery model.

The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising NZ Transport Agency, Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, Beca Infrastructure, and Tonkin & Taylor.
