WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff Tunnelling Engineer of the Year

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has been named Engineering Firm of the Year at the 2015 International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association Awards. In addition, two of the firm’s major global projects; the Eurasia Tunnel in Turkey, and the North Strathfield Rail Underpass here in Australia also received awards.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff’s Australia New Zealand Director of Transport, Charlie Jewkes commented on the significance of the three awards.

“It’s a great achievement to be named Engineering Firm of the Year by the peak industry body for tunnelling around the globe.”

“Along with the Engineering Firm of the Year award, the two project awards presented to WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff highlight the diverse capability of our global tunnelling team that includes road tunnelling under the Bosphorus Strait in Turkey and a local rail tunnel in Sydney.”

“They are very different in terms of scope but innovative delivery methods are at the core of both projects,” said Mr Jewkes.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff was the lead designer for the Eurasia Tunnel Project in Istanbul, Turkey which was named Major Project of the Year- over €500 million. The project involved the construction of a 3.4 km road tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait as part of a 14.6 km roadway linking Asia and Europe.

The North Strathfield Rail Underpass project in Sydney was one of three global finalists  for Outstanding Project of the Year - Up to €50 million. The North Strathfield Rail Underpass project included the design and construction of a 140 m rail underpass construct using a shallow cover driven tunnelling method to reduce construction timeframes and minimise disruption to the rail network.

The award ceremony took place last month in Hagerbach, Switzerland. This is the first time the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association held an awards evening.
