Sydney-based Principal Environmental Scientist, Alex McDonald’s paper will focus on the unique challenges presented by EIAs for Light Rail projects.

Mr McDonald’s presentation hinges on the importance of early and comprehensive stakeholder engagement.

‘EIA’s for light rail differ to those of other infrastructure projects.

‘A comprehensive and consultative EIA can reduce the risk of later design changes and of stakeholder opposition. These factors alone can cost clients and contractors millions of dollars and can have a negative impact on timing and project completion.

‘In my presentation I will share some lessons we’ve learned from EIAs for two of Australia’s current light rail projects, Capital Metro and Sydney Light Rail,’ said Mr McDonald.

Other speakers at CORE include Auckland-based Technical Executive, Evan Giles, who will be presenting on mitigating track formation issues.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff’s presentations are as follows:

  • 11am Tuesday 17 May, Alex McDonald - Light Rail: a unique environmental impact assessment challenge. (Paper by Alex McDonald and Emma Dean.)
  • 1.35pm Tuesday 17 May, Evan GilesTrack Formation Issues: Case studies of efficient mitigation. (Paper by Evan Giles and Daniel Headifin.)
