A Hands-On Approach to Infrastructure Sustainability

This week in New Zealand, Richard Palmer, Director of Sustainability at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff will be presenting his experience of managing infrastructure sustainability (IS) to the rail industry.

Mr Palmer explained that addressing sustainability for large, complex infrastructure projects requires an integrated approach to design, procurement, construction management and operations.

‘Managing the independent certification of projects with the IS rating tool is a real challenge for project teams.

‘An integrated approach between projects disciplines has been pivotal to using the tool to achieve certified IS ratings for projects like Sydney Metro Northwest and Newcastle Light Rail,’ said Mr Palmer.

Mr Palmer is an engineer by training, a consultant by profession and an ecologist at heart.

He leads the Sustainable Places division for WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff in Australia/New Zealand, providing design and advisory services on green buildings, sustainable infrastructure and urban renewal projects.

He is an experienced sustainability consultant and IS accredited professional.
