Boosting WSP’s Environmental Leadership on Major Projects

In a strategic step to better support our clients, senior environmental professional Kitty Barkley has been appointed to the position of Technical Executive, Environment Planning & Management, making the move from WSP’s Sacramento office to join the team in Sydney.

With several complex rail and expressway/highway projects under her belt, Ms Barkley’s appointment reinforces our environmental leadership, particularly in the transport sector.

Ms Barkley has previously worked for 11 years in the Sydney transport and infrastructure space. “Sydney’s infrastructure activity continues at a remarkable pace. We are working on a range of iconic rail and road projects while endeavouring to build a connected and liveable future city,” said Ms Barkley. “The role of environmental assessments on such large-scale projects continues to be significant, particularly in planning healthier communities for denser and more populated cities.”

Prior to relocating to Sydney, Ms Barkley was a Senior Environmental Manager on the California High-Speed Rail Program, where she led WSP’s delivery of environmental documentation, impact assessment, permits and quality documentation for the Central Valley project sections. In the past 30 years, Ms Barkley has held senior positions in global consulting firms and has worked extensively on environmental and infrastructure projects in Australia, South East Asia and the United States. Noteworthy local projects in her portfolio include the North-West Rail Link (Sydney), the Western Sydney Airport Rail Link Study, the Pacific Highway Upgrade (NSW), the Paramatta-Chatswood Rail Link EIS (Sydney), the Homebush Bay Heavy Rail Infrastructure Study (Sydney Olympic Park), and the Western Australia Rail Feasibility (Perth).

Jenny MacMahon, WSP’s Director of Environment for ANZ, said, “Kitty’s experience, and leadership skills will help broaden our offering to the transport sector. We are delighted to have her on board and are eager to leverage her expertise in the environment sector to bring our clients’ projects to life in a sustainable manner.”

Ms Barkley commenced her role in September and is based in our Sydney office.
