Greg Evans honoured at Queen’s Birthday Celebrations

As part of the Queen’s Birthday celebrations, WSP Technical Executive Greg Evans was awarded a Public Service Medal (PSM) for outstanding improvements to employee safety in the roads and maritime sectors in NSW.

Greg was awarded the medal based on his dedication, innovation, leadership and tireless campaigning for improved safety standards over the 40 years of his career with the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) where he helped to make it one of the state’s most efficient and customer-focused agencies.

Greg says, “It’s an honour and a privilege to be awarded the medal. Making sure people get home safely at night is a major passion of mine and to be recognised for this, is a huge thrill.”

During his time with the RMS, Greg led many initiatives that were not only industry leading but the first of their kind globally. Responsible for championing a shift in culture that questioned the tried and true, Greg’s initiatives included:

  • The introduction of road closures during maintenance works to eliminate the risk of traffic accidents on sites:  Zero in 2014 to 180 closures in 2016.
  • Development and implementation of a Safety risk assessment and control tool(ENSITE) that is carried out by site teams rather than by offsite management teams.
  • Fostering and leading a culture of innovation in partnership with the University of Technology, Sydney and their robotics team. Innovations included the award winning Robotic Bridge Inspector, the Grit-Blasting Assistive Device and the Traffic Cone Dispensing truck.

Starting with WSP in early 2017, Greg offers his extensive experience to our Asset and Network Performance Team. He says, “I have 40 years of knowledge across the public sector that will be utilised by the business and that in itself presents a major opportunity. Whether its leadership or helping to foster a culture of innovation, I believe that we can help to implement a smarter and safer environment for all work sites and road users.”
