Sonia Fernandez tunnels for new Transport Solutions

Sonia Fernandez joined our Auckland Transport team in June 2017 as a Principal Tunnel Ventilation Engineer. Sonia brings to our business a passion for fire and ventilation as well as a desire to raise people’s understanding about the importance of this aspect of tunnel design.

A perfectionist at heart Sonia says, “I developed my passion for this topic back in my home town of Madrid. I’m extremely tenacious and will work tirelessly until I know everything is right. Right now, with WSP, I want to keep building on my experience and hopefully even get into the project management side of the business.”

Adding to her quest for experience, Sonia is currently in the midst of completing her PHD in Application of Probabilistic Methods for the Optimization of Ventilation Systems in Road Tunnels at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Sonia has enjoyed the teaching aspect of the degree having already worked as an Associate Professor at the University prior to moving to New Zealand (NZ). She says, “I have built many great relationships and memories with the students, it’s amazing how much you can learn from others.”

Other passions for Sonia include her beloved Real Madrid football team, and the comradery of team sports in which she plays basketball. Her relocation to NZ however has been one of her most proud achievements, she says, “It was a case of now or never, I knew I wanted to experience life abroad again so I thought why not. I love the many adventures that living in NZ brings, from its breathtaking scenery to skydiving over Lake Taupo, it has been an amazing experience.”
