Australia/New Zealand

WSP welcomes two tunnel ventilation specialists to the Australia New Zealand (ANZ) team, boosting the firm’s long established capability in this space at a time when most capital cities are investing in major underground infrastructure projects.

Technical Executive, Sean O’Gorman, rejoins the ANZ team following three and a half years with WSP in the United States. Mr O’Gorman was the Tunnel Ventilation Lead for the Purple Line Extension in Los Angeles, he led the Long Island Rail Road Over Site Development project in Brooklyn NYC, as well as being involved in the tunnel ventilation design for the 2nd Ave subway Phase 2.

Sonia Fernandez has joined the firm as a Principal Ventilation Engineer. She has spent the last four years delivering the Waterview Tunnel in New Zealand, focusing on system integration as well as the ongoing operations and maintenance of the ventilation system.

Doug Graham, WSP’s Geotechnics & Tunnels Section Executive, highlighted the importance of the appointments given the market shift towards underground construction.

Mr Graham said, “Both Sean and Sonia have considerable tunnel systems experience across road and rail projects, and the appointments reflect the recent boom in tunnelling across Australia and New Zealand.

WSP recently completed the design and construction work on Auckland’s Waterview Tunnel and we are currently the delivering the design verification for the Forrestfield Airport Link in Perth. We have also just been announced as part of the team who will build the $6 billion Melbourne Metro Tunnel.  The appointment of Sean and Sonia will be the catalyst for further growth in highly specialised area.”

Prior to his time in the United States, Mr O’Gorman contributed to major projects across ANZ including Glenfield Junction Alliance, North West Metro and Sydney Metro, Auckland’s Victoria Park Tunnel, and Brisbane’s Airport Link and Clem 7 Tunnels.

Sonia has 16 years of experience delivering complex tunnelling works across Europe and ANZ. She has extensive experience in road tunnel analysis, including emissions studies, and commissioning of ventilation, fire life safety and other tunnel M&E and control systems.
