T&D frameworks for engineering services

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has a five year framework in place to deliver Engineering Design services in support of the Northern Electricity Alliance for upgrade of National Grid’s Transmission and Distribution network in the North of England. We also have frameworks with a number of  T&D companies to deliver Civil Engineering Design services in support of their DNO businesses where end clients include Scottish Power Energy Networks, Central Networks and EDF Energy.

Renewing the electrical grid in Scotland

The Beauly to Denny 220 km 400 kV overhead transmission line is critical infrastructure, connecting renewable energy sources in the Highlands to the population in Central Scotland. WSP has been supporting this project for over 8 years, providing key input into the planning process, environmental assessments for proposed sub-stations, and construction management support.  Read more about this project here.

Impact investigations for windfarm at Dogger Bank

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff was commissioned by Forewind to assess grid and environmental impacts for the onshore grid re-enforcement to accommodate the output from Forewind’s proposed offshore windfarm at Dogger Bank on the East Coast of the UK. We reviewed environmental constraints, likely consents required and timescales to obtain consents. We worked in collaboration with Senergy who reviewed onshore Grid asset requirements.

Permits and infrastructure planning for Vattenfall AB

We have been advising Vattenfall Vindkraft AB on permit applications, EIAs, and the planning of infrastructure and electrical systems for a 20-40 MW wind-power facility in Sweden. The infrastructure planning includes geotechnical assessment, field studies and detailed planning of road networks; and the planning of electrical networks includes design of the internal cable network.

Options appraisal for Scottish Power Transmission

Scottish Power Transmission commissioned us to undertake an Options Appraisal to identify the best environmental and technical location for two 132 kV single circuit transmission lines totalling 25 km in length which will connect two proposed wind farms (Ewe Hill and Newfield) in Southern Scotland to the National Grid. We have undertaken full Public and Stakeholder Consultation, assisted with landowner way-leave negotiations, participated in a public exhibition, and prepared a full EIA.  

EIA and permitting at Kraftnat Aland

This strategically important project aims to connect the Island of Aland with Finland by sea cable. WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has provided the EIA and environmental permitting for the construction of a 150 km of 100 MW DC undersea cable and a 110 kV on-shore transmission line and distribution substations to enable this link to be made.

Underground cables to support proposed wind farm

Integral to the proposed development of the Toddleburn Wind Farm was a commitment by Scottish Power Energy Networks to construct a new 6km underground cable connection between the proposed wind farm and the existing wind farm at Dun Law. From Dun Law, the additional supply is to be connected to the national grid via an upgrade to the substation. The proposed cable route runs close to an existing private water supply. We assessed the potential impacts on the farm from the proposed underground cable construction and recommended mitigation measures for adoption by the cable contractor.
