Liverpool ONE

One of the UK’s largest new shopping centres, covering 17ha of Liverpool city centre and incorporating more than 150,000m² of retail space.

Our client’s challenge

A dramatic departure from conventional shopping centre developments, Liverpool ONE is arranged over an organic city centre streetplan.

It includes 3,000 car parking spaces, integrated leisure facilities and 360 new homes.

Our approach

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff was responsible for the design of the building services, vertical transportation, microclimate and a site-wide sustainability strategy.

The biggest challenge on such a complex project was the coordination of the separate elements and ensuring the design information was correct and available at the same time. There were a number of architectural practices across the project, but WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff’s site-wide strategies allowed the development of common design concepts, products and materials, which reduced capital and future maintenance costs.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff’s significant experience in retail development led to the development of optimal, integrated solutions.

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff designed ventilation and smoke-extraction systems for a massive 1875-space car park underneath the centre’s new green space, using extensive thermal modelling analysis to develop unique plant room solutions. The prefabrication of all service corridors allowed for quick installation and ensured high-quality workmanship, while capital cost savings were also achieved by the use of a single multi-utility service provider across the project.
