MedImmune turned to WSP to help ramp up its existing egg-based bulk vaccine manufacturing process to allow for a rapid increase in production for its influenza vaccine.

“WSP is delighted to have been part of an integrated team that has been recognised by the ISPE through this prestigious award, said Nigel Barnes, Managing Director.  “The award is a great recognition of the work that we did with MedImmune, through innovative engineering, to help increase their yields and reduce waste.”

As part of a collaborative team, WSP CEL, together with MedImmune and the equipment vendor, Rame Hart, devised a solution that would improve efficiency, reduce manual handling and increase capacity. We were contracted to deliver the project which included project management, detailed design and qualification.

The new automation technology has resulted in a 15 percent  increase in yield, a 25 percent reduction in seasonal labour, an 8 percent reduction in rejects, and a decrease in waste at every stage of the process.

The Facility of the Year Award Judging Panel recognized the UK Automation Upgrade Project because of “its work to drive a paradigm shift in egg-based vaccine manufacturing,” which led to the Facility of the Year Award for Equipment Innovation.
