WSP appointed to masterplan 10sq km Airport City Development in Doha

WSP is part of the winning team led by international architect OMA in the competition to masterplan both a 10 sq km work/live development and the airport expansion up to 2042 for the new Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Doha.

Airport City will link the new airport, due to commence operations in April, to the city of Doha through four distinct districts. As well as providing a major transport hub to link the HIA to greater Doha, Airport City includes cargo and warehousing facilities, premises for aviation authorities and homes for future employees at the site.

WSP is assisting the detailed masterplanning of both land and airside future airport expansion up to 2042, including the provision of a Second Passenger Terminal and the infrastructure for the FIFA 2022 World Cup. HIA will welcome up to 30 million passengers initially into Doha and ultimately will expand to beyond 50 million passengers per year.

WSP project director Graeme Power-Hosking said: “This is an extremely exciting project for WSP and one which showcases our global aviation and master planning skills, now enhanced by our Genivar merger. On opening HIA will welcome up to 30 million passengers into Doha  each year and, with the FIFA 2022 World Cup putting the city on the world-stage, our aim alongside our client – the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) Steering Committee - is to make it a world-class airport with world-class infrastructure.

“Our client is relentless in setting new benchmarks in design and uncompromising on quality and this raises the bar for us as well.  WSP is uniquely positioned to excel in this exciting project drawing on our global skills base, and in particular our previous experience working on a new terminal.”

WSP has been providing a wide range of consultancy services in this development study including all engineering, security, transport planning and specialist aviation planning and design coupled with our expertise in environmental and sustainability consultancy.

Delivery of the first phase of the masterplan has been set to align with the Qatar-hosted 2022 FIFA Football World Cup.
