Guardian Sustainable Business Awards 2015: WSP wins Consultancy of the Year

We were awarded for “the scale of the difference we’re making to global sustainability”.

Guardian Sustainable Business Awards 2015

We received the Consultancy of the Year - Impact Award at the Guardian Sustainable Business Awards 2015. The awards gala was held in London on April 29, 2015. Our submission emphasized the core elements of our sustainability practice: our Future Ready program and the unique combination of environmental scientists, management consultants and engineers working on our projects for faster, larger impact.

“They’re integrating sustainability into the DNA of business, and they’re future-ready”, as judges said in a Guardian article. Launched in 2014, our Future Ready program will be rolled out globally and aims to give all staff a consistent understanding of the future and inspire them to design all projects to this future as well as current code.  We are the first consultant to roll out a programme of this nature, helping our teams design projects that are more robust, ready for the future and with a lower total cost of ownership. In parallel to our client work, we bring forward alternatives. In 2014 we funded and produced research challenging London to be an all-electric city by 2035, solving a number of problems in the city, reducing noise and greenhouse gases.  Separately we published research suggesting 630,000 new homes could be provided in London by building above existing public buildings.

David Symons, Director of Environmental at WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff in the UK, adds: “Future Ready encourages teams to think rather than just follow a codified approach.  It’s an approach which makes work more interesting and produces better solutions.” Beyond our client services, sustainability is part of our culture. For example, in the UK, our internal PACT programme pays staff a bonus in their salary for leading a low carbon lifestyle outside work.  We also have a set of internal sustainability standards based on bronze-silver-gold requirements to provide consistency and to measure and reward each market for their sustainability performance.

Now in their fifth edition, the Guardian Sustainable Business awards showcase the people and projects that are helping businesses shine and achieve for people, planet and profit.
